FIRE IN SOUTH ROAD.
COTTAGE DESTROYED. ' A five-roomed cottage in South Road, opposite Heidelberg Gate,'owned by Mr W. Bickers, of Marton, and occupied by Mr. J. Tunnidiffe, railway' shunter, was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. On the previous evening Mr. Tunnidiffe noticed a small outbreak in tha chimney breast of one of tho rooms, and, taking prompt measures to extinguish it, thought he had succeeded and that everything was safe. Shortly before 4 a.m., a motor cyclist who was passing noticed flames issuing from the building, roused the- inmates and those of the adjoining houses, and then called up the fire brigade, f The brigade was quickly on the spot, and, with a plentiful supply of water, did excellent work in preventing the fire extending to tho other closely adjoining cottages. They were unable, however, to save Mr. residence from being almost completely destroyed, and the furniture was totally lost. The building was insured for "£2OO in the South British ■ Company, and the furniture for'£lso,in the Ocean office.
