(From Our Ona Cflfl'tispondcii-;.; [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratford, May 10. This afternoon the Mayor (Mr J W McMillan), Crs. J. Masters, A. Coleman', IX J. ,Ma lone, C. Jackson, borough engineer and the News representative inspected the various parts of the boroiHi per motor cars. Tho.visits made were to the borough pound, stables, septic tank site, gravel pit, etc. The roads covered by the cars appeared to be in splendid order, whilst the stables' were found to be very elean, and the horses in excellent condition. The septic tank was also closely inspected, and the working of tho tank explained in detail by the engineer. Rubbish pits were also noted. Near the septic tank borough men are engaged removing the clay top surface from a cutting that will yield a good supply of light gravel. Footpaths were noted to be in very fair order, and, generally, councillors were agreeably surprised, to note the excellent"conditlon of the roads and borough property. Later on, the Works Committee will bring dow n a report on the inspection. In the meantime, from a newspaper point of view, matters appear to be working very smoothly.

Stratford was deserted this afternoon, a large number heading for the Hawera The weather here was not too good, but this did not deter many from leaving the town. It was very noticeable that there was ample accommodation for passengers by 'the mail train this morning.

Some.years back Stratford possessed a very good debating society, and many of our present-day officials were keen members of the society. Besides filling in an evening occasionally the society is an excellent means of helping _.a member to gain the confidence necessary to express himself clearly at a public gathering. The old societv, or Parliamentary Union, misht well be resuscitated. There should he abundant material to get either going, it only needs a little energy. Ngaere has started off with the card parties, and these have been going for many week-B in New Plymouth. Eltham has for several years had a card tournament that created considerable interest during the winter nights. With the number of towns close handy, and also with teams from the Druids, Oddfellows, Foresters and railway here soma very good tournament games could be arranged, and pleasant evenings assured. The fame of the "Ephos" fertiliser has received a big "boost" here by some magnificent roots of white turnips grown by Mr. George Sang3ter, on the East Road, via Toko. Mr <T. McAllister has take several'photographs of a paddock of these turnips, and the uniform quality and great bulk of" each turnip proveß the "Ephoß" an ideal mixture. Mr. B. Dingle is representative of, this fertiliser, whilst Masters, Ltd., are the local agents. Details concerning prices, etc., appear on the leader page of the News. T. LAMASON'S WEEKLY REPORT.
