EXCESS PROFITS TAX.

MEETING AT MANAIA. Mr. R. Hughes, president of the Farmers' Union, Manaia branch, presided at a meeting of farmers held there on Mon'day evening. The attendance was reinarkably good, over 100 being present. 'Messrs C. A. Wilkinson. M.P., and Mr. G. H. Burkeridge were the speakers. Mr. Buckeridge, in the course of his remarks, touched on the activities of the union, and showed how much further work lay ahead of the union. There was also a need for thorough organisation if they were desirous of obtaining the best results. He expressed the hope that those now standing aloof from membership would show practical sympathy by joining. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson then addressed the meeting, and went fully into details of the operations of the Act, and gave examples of how the Excess Income Tax profits should be made up. Details of his speech have already appeared in these columns, but tliev lost nothing by being recounted at Manaia. The member for Kgmont received a very attentive hearing, and at the cloße answered several questions. Hearty votes of thanks to both speakers and a similar compliment to the chairman, concluded a very interesting meeting.
