Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports: The enemy, with considerable forces, this afternoon launched a third counter-attack on our new positions south of the Souchez river. The first wave reached the slope fronting the trenches, where it was destroyed by rifle and ma-chine-gun fire. His supporting waves were caught by our artillery barrage, and broken up. No German reached tin trenches. A strong body of the enemy was caught in the open in the vfcinity of Bullecourt, and our artillery and ma-chine-guns inflicted heavy casualties. , Seven German aeroplanes were brought down on Sunday. FURIOUS ARTILLERY DUEL -■• EKEMY HEAVY LOSSES. . Received May 8, 9 p.m. London, May S. A Preach communique states: During the day enemy did not renew attempts north of the La Feaux mill and agaiiißt Chemin des Dames. The artillery duel was continued furiously in the direction of Hurtuiles and the Craonne sector, where the troops consolidated the position on the California plateau. According to the statements of prisoners, four fresh regiments participating in the- fruitless attacks last night on this plateau suffered very heavy losses northwest of Rheims. We appreciably extended our positions south of Sapingneul.
