DEATH OF BEN VILJOEN.
PICTURESQUE PERSONALITY OF THE BOER WAR. General Bon Viljoen died in January at La Mesa, Now Mexico. General Viljoen, who was forty-nine years of age, was for a time a member ; of the Parliament of the Transvaal Rcj public. He was present at the sur.reudor of Sir Starr Jameson's small force to the Boers at Doornkop in-1890. A wily and resourceful commandant, lie played a part of some importance in the earlier stage of the Boer war, but was finally captured and sent as a prisoner of war to St. Helena. He visited London in 1902, appeared in character on the stage, find published a book of ''War Reminisj eeuees." In the former country his love of adventure caused him to throw in his 1M with the insurrectionists under General Madero, in 1911, and it was then reported that lie Irnd been killed in the lighting at Jaures. A picturesque personality, with a strong proclivity for ''showmanship,'' lie was more or Ices a foreign typo in the country of his birth.
