THE SEVENTH BALLOT.
NATIONAL SHORTAGE 1706. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, -April 33. The total number of voluntary recruits obtained for the 31st Reinforcements up to Saturday last, when voluntary recruiting for this draft closed down was 617, leaving a national shortage of 1706. The only district which proved able to supply its full quota under the voluntary system was the Bay of Plenty, which thus has the distinction of having done so for the sixth time since the Military Service Act was introduced. North Otago and C'iutha, on the other hand, failed to raise a single voluntarv recruit, while North Canterbury only raised one. The ballot, which will be held tomorrow to fill the vacancies, will be the biggest yet held under the Act. The reason is thai owing to the stifiening of .the medical examination, rendering a. smaller number of fit recruits available, it has now been decided to drew a proportion of fhc men for every vaci'.Jic*' 10 be filled.
