HAWERA.
(From Our Own. Correspondent.) At the instigation of liis Worship (he Mayor, Mr. Dixon, n large and representative meeting of citizens was held in the Borough' Chambers for the purpose of considering the drastic alterations to take place in connection with the railway service. Mr. Dixon, who occupied the chair, referred at some length to the difiienlties of the situation "that Lad arisen, and said he fc,lfc sure they did not want to hamper the Government in uliy way, but at the same time the proposed service would be very detrimental to Hawcra and district. Several speakers also stressed the importance vi endeavoring to do something to improve the position, and the following resolution was ultimately carried:— "That this meeting of representatives of the Chamber of Commerce, Tradesmen's Association, and citizens of.Hawera regret the cause fqr a reduction of the train service, and strongly rcrom mends that any alteration of 'same take place on Monday, Wednesday" andFriday, so as to give the best possible service on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday." A committee, consisting of Messrs Dixon, Lynsky, Bone and Os* borne, was set up to'go and interview the traffic manager at' Waqganui. The -deputation proceeds to Wangamii on Monday. The Mayor then Toferred to the recent labor troubles that had arisen, and moved the. following resolution, which *'as carried unanimously: "That this meeting of citizens of Hawcra tenders its loyal support to the National Government in enforcing the Military Service Act, and is determined to do ail in its power to obtain reinforcements until the termination of the war." Father Arkwright, who has Tecently been at Feilding, has beeu appointed parish priest of Eltham.
