TEACHERS' CLASSES.

CONCLUDED YESTERDAY^ The course of agricultural instruction which was held in New Plymouth during the past fortnight, and which' has been attended by about 30Q teachers from all parts of the Taranaki Education Diaw trict, was brought to a conclusion yes« terday. The morning was devoted toj agricultural instruction, and in the aft ternoon the teachers assembled in th« Good Templar Hall, where they wew addressed by Mr. A. J. Morton, chief inspector, who also addressed them at; the opening of the course. Mr. P. H. S. White (the newly api pointed' member of the board) was oor-* dially welcomed by Mr. R. E. Browna (agricultural director) and Mr. Morton. Mr. White briefly replied. MR. MORTON'S ADDRESS. Mr. Morton made comments on ma* thods of teaching supplementary W those given at the Beginning of the course. He emphasised especially Iho practical application to method tkat produced results required by the demands of the course of instruction in the main subjects. Tho importance of training in mental discipline rather tnan mere class drill was also stressed. Mr. Morton then referred in detail to amendments to the regulations relating to the inspection and conduct of schools and to suggestions recently issued for the assistance of teachers of the sraalliv schools. He concluded with a tribute to the importance of the teaching profession, nnd the advantage to the com munity of the wider interest ensured by the acquirement by the teachers in knowledge relating to the occupations of the people amongst whom they live.
