The farming community in this district should appreciate the steady rain that has been falling for the. past twelve hours. Mr. E. C. Hollard received word that us father died at the Lower Hutt on Sunday morning. Mr. R. Peterson, of Nelson street, received a message..on Saturday that his son, Private K. Peterson, is being invalided home on account of gas poisoning, and is expected to arrive in Wellington on the 4th May. Yesterday morning the railway station presented quite a busy appearance, a large number of soldiers returning to camp after final leave. Private William Morrissey, who has been an active member of the Hibernian Society for some time, was the recipient of a si'lver-mount-cd pipe from his fellow members, prior to his returning to camp yesterday. Messrs M. J. Lynskey, A. Hunter and K. Deem went to Wellington yesterday Inorning to attend a conference of those interested in the formation of a Dominion producers' shipping company. In the Magistrate's Court on Monday morning, before Mr. W. R. Haselden, 5.M.,/a first offender was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for a hreecli of his porhibition order William Gardiner was fined £2. A very interesting bowling match took place on the Hawera green on Saturday for the Buttons. The. present holdersMessrs Curtis, Park-house, Henson and ,f. Syme, were defeated by Messrs Black, Bun-ell, Corkhil land Holland by 25 to 12.
