ADULTERATING MILK.
AN EXAMPLE MADE.

Harry Jarvis, a milk supplier, wal charged at the Magistrate's Court today upon two informations with having sold milk containing a boron compound. The Crown prosecutor asked for a heavy penalty because defendant had previously been convicted for adding water to his milk. These prosecutions, lie sa.d, were becoming numerous, and would b« no effective deterrent unless heavy fine* were imposed. The use of a boron compound was very injurious to little children and babies, For the defence Mr. O'Regan stated that he intended to plead guilty. The circumstances.were that owing to the shoragu of water for cooling purposes during the dry weather Jarvi* placed a little carbonate of soda in tho milk as a preservative. He had committed the breach quite unintentionally. The magistrate took a serious view of the case, and imposed a penalty of £2O, with costs. An order was also made that the conviction be advertised.
