SOMAN CATHOLIC APPEALS. - - , (From Our Own Correspondent.)' : Wellington, April 5, i Appeals made by Archbishop Q'S'nea on behalf of two Roman Catholic priests, Father Patrick Joseph Smith and Father Francis Lynch Dignan, were considered By the Third Wellington Military Service Bord yesterday. The 'members of the Board were Messrs. W. H. S. Moorhouse, A. O'L, Coiisidine, and M. J. Mack. Air H. I<\ O'Leary, who appeared for f'c appellants, handed in certificates snowing that both men Nvere ordained priests. He stated that there had been no change in the circumstances since he had last appeared before the Board in support of similar applications. The evidence given by Archbishop O'Shea 011 a former occasion was pu,t in. Mr. O'Leary mentioned that the appeals were not personal ones. Mr. Considine: "Several people have made representations to me recently that Catholics have not gone to the front in their proper quota. When you were before this Board before you made the statement that 14,000 Catholics had enlisted. Can you verify that?" Mr. O'Leary sa'id he would mike inquiries on the point. His. figures had been based on a official statement that one priest went forward as chaplain with' each 1000 Catholic soldiers'. Fourteen Roman Catholic chaplains had gone to the front. / Mr. Considine: "I will make another statement and until it Is proved to be wrong it must stand. What I will say is tliia: Of the Catholics ivrho went from New Zealand the casualties were 17 per ■ cent, and of the other .people 14 per cent." Mr. Mask: "Casualties :or deaths 3" Mr. Considine: "Deaths." • Mr. O'Leary:" "That is a most interesting statement to investigate. ' Perhaps it k the Irish impetuosity which carries fchem a long way.' Baldwin: "A very'long way sometime?:, and. in all directions." The Chairman: "Even to the treading on the-tails of coats." : The appeals were sine die, with a stipulation t'liat they should be considered again' before the 'First Division was exhausted.
