Mr. E. Newman, M.P,, for Rangitikel. is on a short visit to New Plymouth. Mrs. V. 11. Fletcher has received word of the promotion of Major Fletcher to the rank of colonel. Quartermaster-Sergeant G. M. Beek arrived in New Plymouth on Friday' night on Easter leave. Mr. James Clarke, who was for some years a member of the Borough Council, lias definitely decided to bo a candidate at the Borough election this month. Mr R, C, Kirk the well-known Wellington barrister, i? on a holiday Visit to New Plymouth. Forty-four years ago ill- Kirk, who is a son of the late Rev. Wm. Kirk, lived in the town. Corporal A. J. Smith, of the 29th Reinforcements, well known between Urcnui and New Plymouth, leaves by the mail train this morning after spe'mlin" his Easter leave here. ' ° Owing to tho pressure- of business Mr J. D. Sole was unable to accede to the request of the deputation .to allow himself to be nominated for d seat on the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Private F, E. McEwen. New Zealand Medical Corps, who for the last eleven months has been engaged in hospital work in the camps, left New Zealand with the first half of the 23rd Reinforcements. Mr. E. D. Good, of the Customs Department, Wellington, and for some years of the local branch of the Department, is spending his holidays in New Plymouth. Mr. Good is accompanied by Mrs. Good. Mr. W. T. Jennings returned on Satur day night from a trip through the King Country. During his tour, he opened a school at Te akarae, on the Wanganui River. This makes the sixty-fifth school that has been opened in the'Egmont and Taumarunui electorate since Mr Jennings has represented that district. On Saturday night Mr. F. P. Corkill received cable advice of the death of hit. nephew, Lieut. Ernest Corkill, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, who has been killed in 'action. A Liverpool boy, the only child of his parents, LieutJCorkill joined the colors immediately on the outbreak of war, and after strenuous service as a private ho was awarded a commission by the War Office. The engagement is announced of Miss Kathleen Airini Mair, daughter of Captain Mair and Mrs Mair (nee Miss Sperrey, a New Zealand artist— one of whose pictures, "An Itaiian Goatherd," is in the British National Gallery), to Hon. Ralph Vane, sou of Lord and Lady Barnard, of Raby Castle, England. Miss Mail's mother is dead, and she has been for some years living in England, but has many friends of her own and of her parents in New Zealand.

Mr Frank H, Morgan,who for over eleven years has been a member of the "New Zealand Times" literary staff, for the last four of which he has occupied tho position of chief sub-editor, has joined the head office (Wellington) staff of the United Press Association. Recently lie received from the literary and mechanical staffs of the paper a presentation to remind him of his long recognition with them. In handing to Mr. Morgan a gold watch, Mr. R. A. Loughnan, associate editor, assured him that all in the office, where lie was highly esteemed for many admirable qualities, were exceeding sorry at his departure. Mr. G, H. Dixon, the manager, stated that Mr. Morgan's resignation had been received with great regret, and that in leaving lie would carry with him the very best of " ishes for his future success. On bchah of the mechanical staff Mr. Harper expressed the hope that Mr. Morgan would be happy in his new work.
