ENTENTE PEACE NOTE.
CLIMAX OF MADNESS.
WEIRD GERMAN STATEMENTS.
The Cologne Gazette publishes an appeal to Gcrnnn people which is interesting as evidence of the fact that the German semi-official press is now reduced to extravagant descriptions as a consequence of defeat.
The Cologne Gazette describes the Entente note as the climax of human madness, and interprets it us follows: '"VMiiit our enemies, v.nnt is pretty much all that we or our allies possess. Russia wants Constantinople, tialicin, and Bukovlna. East and West. Prussia and Poscn. Italy wants Trieste and pari of the Tyrol. French men want Alsace and Lorraine and the left bank of the Rhine. Englishmen want our colonics, and, of course, Heligoland and ports on the North Sea and Baltic. Our navy, the whole of our artillery, and all our munitions are to be handed over. Our army is to bo disbanded and the people made defenceless. In addition, pur people made defenceless, ]n addition, our people would have to restore all territories injured in the course of the war, and give guarantees for the future that it will never again' take its own independent road 'which will cross the roads of other peoples. Further, our people have to pay a war indemnity of, say. iTi,oOfi,oriO,riflo, and our enemies would bo. so kind aR tn facilitate raising this sum by taking over all public, undertake lugs.'"
Discussing the pence offer at a patriotic meeting, Professor llnnzinger said: "Our peace offer was an Emperor's word, a Christian work, and a Christian word' Rod alone knows how many hearts' of men and women even in England blessed the Kaiser on that day. But our piiemies held a council find turned th.n h|iissir,'.; into cursing. England was the soul of business. This England which dares to play the part of protector of civilisation has always worked with whips and whiskey. This England who wants words for Gorman barbarism is a country in which one has to go about with a 'lantern to mid a really educated liian. Tiln iu> of humanity was born of the spirit of i.essing, and Herder, and made glorious by Klopstock, Schiller and.Goethe. The German idea of humanity is pure. Howdifferent it is from the* puny, anaemic, and dry-as-dust idea of humanity which W lH'?»pses to come tons by'way nf England and Americtt, tVein? 'Raiser, our Chancellor, and our vaders we deny we are ready, and to mr enemies we cry, 'You have already midc us hot, but you have not yet madeus boil. When boiling point comes, Godhelp you.'"
