RECAPTURE OF A CONVICT.

CARRYING GUN AND REVOLVER

Wellington, Yesterday. John Dorno, the prisoner who escaped from the Terrace Gaol on the morning of March 17, was recaptured yesterday. He fell into the hands of Constable Gegan on tho beach at Levin, and after a rather sensational arrest was brought to tho city and lodged behind prison walls last night. Constable Gregan was walking with his wife on the Levin beachh yesterday morning, when he saw a man who answered to tho description of the escaped prisoner. The man was carrying a gun, and his manner appears to have confirmed the constable's suspicions. Gregan managed to get colse to the man without alarming him. and then threw him to tho ground suddenly and slipped on the handcuffs. A search ghowed that Dome was carrying a revolver of the army pattern as well as the gun. His clothes and other artilces in his possession indicated that he had raided someone's property during his period of liberty.

It will be remembered that Dome got away from the Terrace Gaol early on a Saturday morning. He was serving a sentence of several years' imprisonment for indecent assault. The man appears to have made his way across the hills behind Brooklyn and Island Bay, and to have secured civilian clothes at an early stage of his journey. It is suspected that he paid a visit to Paraparaumu soon after his escape.
