PERSONAL.
The death is reported from Hawera of Mrs. Annie Rogers, relict of the late General Rogers, of the Indian Medical Corps, at the great age of ninety years. The interment takes place at New Plymouth to-day. Sergeant (Bandmaster) Malcolm Brunette, who is on active service with tha Wellington Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of honorary second lieutenant. He is a brother of Mr. H. A. Brunette, of Hawera.
Chaplain-Captain Dore, one of the chaplain heroes of Gallipoli, who has been undergoing treatment at Eotorua, hns sufficiently recovered from his injuries to discard his crutch, and lie can now walk with tht aid of two sticks.
Captain T. H. Chudley (R.N.R., retired list) marine superintendent at Wellington for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, has just received official intimation that he has been promoted from, the rank of lieutenant, R.N.R., to lieu-lenant-commander.'
Corporal J. Muir (Hawora) who a. few weeks ago returned from active service, and was appointed one of the special bayonet instructors at Trentham camp, has been promoted to the rank of regi-. mental sergeant-major, with the other instructors, in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, whilst employed in his present position.
The death occurred at New Plymouth on Thursday of Mrs. R. Cliarteris. D(* ceased, who was a daughter of Mr. Howitt, of.Patea, was the first white child, born at Stony River, Okato, and was \ born during the Maori War. During her life at Patea she was (saya the Press) an indefatigable worker on bahalf of tho Presbyterian Church. The interment takes place at Patea to-day.
An old and respected resident of the' Balclutha district passed away on Sunday morning last in the person of Mr Andrew Mackie, of Kapapuaka, at the age of 74. Deceased was born in Fifei shire, Scotland, and landed in New Zealand 54 years ago. For the greater part of tho time he had been in the Clutha district, and for over forty years was a member of the Loyal Dalton Lodge of Oddfellows.
Information has been received in Auckland that Gunner Walter J. A. Jones, of the New Zealand Field Artillery, has been awarded the Military Medal. Gunner Jones is the son of Mr. J. A. Jonei, of Crummer road, off Ponsonby road. Prior to enlisting he was employed in a surveyor's office in that city. A brother, Private Roger Jones, was killed on the Somme while engaged in in wouuded.
The death occurred on Monday afternoon of Mr. J. F. Heckler, of "Forest Downs," Mangamahoe. Deceased had been suffering from heart trouble for some time pas£, and on Monday afternoon he suddenly collapsed while seated at a desk. The deceased was 69 years of age, and was a native of Waikouaitl, Otago. Ho had spent about thirty years in Wairarapa, first in South Wa'irarapa and then going to Mangamahoe, where lie purchased a farm and resided till his death.
Mr W. G. Aspinall, of Tenmka, lias received a letter from his son, Privato Denis Aspinall, stating that he and hit three brothers met recently at the home of their undo, Sir Thomas Mackenzie, in London. Denis left with the 18th Reinforcements; Sergeant Brian Aspinall joined the Army Medical Corps in Australia, aiul has seen service in Egypt and France, and is now doing duty at Sling Camp; and Private Guy Aspinall left with the Oth Reinforcements, was wounded in France, and is now in England recuperating. Another brother who left with an early reinforcement from Australia, was invalided liom« after seeing considerable service..
Mr. Henry Davis, ex-Maj'or of Ashburton, died at the Asliburtoi) Hospital on Sunday evening. Deceased came to thee olony in 1802 in the ship Mermaid, when he was six years of age, in com* pany with his brother, Mr. William Davis (who resides at Amberlny) anJ his sister. Mrs. John Thome, qf Hororata. The late Mr. Davis took a verj keen interest in municipal affairs, and was a member of the Ashburton Borough Council for 11 years. He was elected Mayor in 1003 and held that ofllea continuously for 12 years until 1015, when the present Mayor ijfr. Galbraith) contested the seat against him and win elected.
