MATERNITY AND MEDICAID.
.FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' POUNCU/0 PROPOSALS. By Telegraph.—'Press Association, Auckland,, Last Night. A deputation from the Friendly So* cieties' Council asked the Hon. Hanan that the maternity allowance bo increased from £4 to £<! as the National Provident Fund; also that a further conference be held between the societies and the Goernment in regard to the. management of farmers' affairs. The Minister Baid that raising the bonus would involve a considerable sum. He would go into the matter bo as to form an idea of the amount required. The deputation also suggested that, after the war, the Government should take up the matter of providing medi* cal attention for the whole community, and that the Government should train u| medical men from the public schools and eventually pay them for; their services. The Minister said he favored the en* couingcment of boys with the right ability to enter the profession, and a great deal had been done in that direction already. He would convey the representations of the deputation to> the Minister for Public Health. Mr. Hanan also promised to look is* to the matter of extending the conces* sions at Rotorua and Hanmer Sana* tori urn to the wives of friendly society members; of the re-insurance of sol* diers who returned to the Dominion and died here and not on active service; and of granting facilities to the node* ties to operate on post office saving! bank accounts by cheques.
