THE CALL OF THE KING.
By Jamos Izett. (All Right? Res«v.;d). Awake, my people, 0 arise! Hear ye not that threatening sound Comes booming o'er the trembling ground ? War, a portentous voice hath found, And soon its breath Will burst into an angry roar, AVill Kurope shake from shore to shore, And horrors upon horrors pour In blood and death! Awake, my people, 0 arise! See ye not our envious foe His legions muster, row on row? To sink our Isles in ruin—woe — In his desire, Our too ambitious enemy Covets our commerce wide and free, iAnd"our Dominions oversea He would acquire!
Awake, my people, 0 arise! The only law, the only guide, / He claims all issues to decide So he may over justice ride Supreme, and chief; His friendship past deceit and lies, Always he deemed our realm his prize. Behold him now without disguise At heart a thief!
Awake, my people, 0 arise! Striking at our integrity, lie Demands the freedom of'the sea; The waters always have been free And he enjoyed; His aim our unity to break, Empire existence is at stake, We must our utmost efforts make Or be destroyed!
Awake, my people, O arise! Built up hath he a mighty power; Come now, thinks he, the fateful hour, But you, my people, will not cower Nor shrinking fear; Quick strength and courage you will bring, A proud defiance now you fling, Your cry—Our Empire and our King With rousing cheer!
Awake, my people, O arise! Intrigues, falsehoods, excuses vain, Treaties broken his records stnin, Upon his brow the brand of CainMurders immenseAwful his crimes. Of hellish deed Of abominations you may read, For innocents slain hearts still bleed With g-ief intense!
Awake, my people, O arise! Held in the hollow of his hand Governments yield to his command; You see his work in many lands— You are not blind. You know such labors will not cease Turkc3', Bulgaria and Greece Whilst pledged to war, professing peace * To stab behind.
Awake, my people, O arise! We never did the German wronj, We praised his art, we voiced" his song,
Gave him large trade our ports among— What now our fate? His anger flares like blazing foaly Loud, deep and foul his curses roll, Listen, whilst he pours forth his soul In Hymns of Hate!
Wake,'my people, O avis-if Justice by us hath not been soiled. For justice we have stood—have toiled— For justice we are now embroiled In this dread strife; z To save weak nations oui desire To lift mankind we do aspire, Our aim—higher and still higher To noblest life!
Awake, my people, 0 arise! Not yet for us to break or bend, Not yet for us is near the end, All glories past we will transcend In this great fight; Arise and smite this eimiiing foe, Arise, and strike decisive blow, Arise and to the world show Your ' strength—your miglit!
Awake, my people, 0 arise! The bloody Truss., the brutal Hun. Think of the shames already done, 'Tis' time to make them skip and run , , At their best speed, ( 'Tis time to make them think and feel, 'Tis time to make them shriek and squeal. Op—Give them lead and give them steel To teach them heed!
Awake, my people, 0 arise! Think of the deeds your sires have wrought, The.battles, strenuous, they fought, The glory with their blood they tought On land—on sea. Arise and emulate their fame, Your patriotism all flame. Will put this foe to rout and shame Triumphantly!
Awake, my people, 0 ami! On God—who knows our cause is just—- , And your stout hearts we place our trust, You'll lay this German in the dust To there decay; In cottage as in stately halls, On men—on women—duty falls, It is your King upon you calls, Make no delay, but haste a wayArise, Arise!
