WINTER IN TRENTINO.

PREPARING FOp OFFENSIVE. London, March 11. The correspondent of The Times at Italian headquarters- sayß that cold, snow, ice and winds, an unusually rigorous winter, have augmented the difficulties of warfare in the Trentino, but have not deadened the activity of the opposing armies that are holding the heights. The perils of the incessant hostility of winter have taken toll of life and limb. One unit lost 400 fighters in a week through avalanches. The enemy's losses have been equally heavy. Drift snow has swept away barracks and corrugated shelters which had stood for years. The soldiers remained and worked, seemingly oblivious to the cold. Engineers and infantry have worked like bees since the suspension of hostilities in September, and have prepared for spring operations. May is the most feasible month for movements on a large scale. The accomplishments of the Austrian in ilie Trentino since the retreat in June furnish food for reflection. They ; have serviceable 2000 miles of militaryroads between Aige Valley and Cadoro. They have constructed hundreds of miles ! of tremendously important wire ways, • and have laid 'in vast supplies. Thev have doubled, or even tiebled, their 1 troops.' The visits of the highest Aus- - tro-Gcrman commanders may be slg- ' nificant of aggressive intentions. • 'The Italians have not been idle. What ■ I saw is most encouraging. The biou.i- ---> tains bristle with great works of de- - fence. The spirit of the soldiers is most f impressive. One is convinced that the enemy cannot pass the formidable barf rier. "We' only hope that they will f try," are the words heard everywhere.. " ~
