NEW ZEALAND COAL.
WILL IT BE COMMANDEERED? -Duncdin, March 23. Colliery proprietors are particularly interested in inquiries being made by the Minister of Munitions and Supplies as to the comparative output of all mines throughout New Zealand during the first two monijis of 1916 and 1917. There is a diversity of opinion among Dunedin proprietors as to the real purpose of the Ministerial request for information. Several of those concerned in the industry think that the Department merely desires to obtain evidence as to whether or not there is a serious operation this year of a "ea' canny"-policy; others hold the opinion, however—an oninion that is gaining the greater support—that the Ministerial inquiry as to output indicates an intention on thepart of the Government to take over the coal mining industry for the remainder of the war.
