MR. CHURCHILL'S DEFENCE.
SECRET AT ABANDONMENT OF OPERATIONS ON EVE OF SUCCESS. Received March 81, 1,1.20 a.m. London, March 21. Mr. Churchill explained the Admiralty standpoint in regard to the decision to attack the Dardanelles, and declared ha was not endeavoring to relieve himself of responsibility, or transfer it to the War Council After arguing with Lord Fisher, as First Sea Lord, ho did not exercise the right to utilise the Fleet in the Dardanelles. Mr. Churchill proceeded to quote facts refuting the Commission's references as to the heavy los 3 of blood and treasure. Contrariwise, the advantages of the attack made themselves invaluably felt Ta many sphere of operations, including the active ad. hesion, of Italy to the Allies.
