.WEST END DEFEAT NEW PLYMOUTH. _ The following are the detailed scores m the New Plymouth 'A' v. West End bowling match on Saturday, New Plymouth being mentioned first.— Brooking, Dempsey, Burgess, Bary (s) 2S v. Tiehbon, Hooker, Hill. F. Newell (a) 18. Winfiehl, Hooper, Phillips, H. Smart (s) 22 v. ,1. Veale, Walsh, Townslev, Sole (s) 2fl. Outfield, M'llroy, Blundell, Johnson (s) 17 v. Thomson, T. Sole, Oliver, Curtis (s) 29. Totals: New Plymouth 'A' 67: West End 70. SOUTHERN DIVISION NOTES. (By our Travelling Correspondent). The winning of the banner competition by the Stratford Club by defeating Eltham on Thursday, was a popular victory. The best game of the series was the first match against Hawera, when victory went to Stratford by the narrow margin of three points. In the second game, at Hawera, Stratford never had a look in, and this, their only loss, was a substantial one, 40 points down. In the third contest Hawera were unfortunate in that several of the best men were unable to get away, and Stratford scored by a big win—4o points. Eltham entered late in the fray, and considering their small membership, have done very well, although failing to win a match in any engagement.

, Of the Stratford rinks it must be said that Sharp had an envious innings, his skipping being invariably successful, and just now the youthful last man is playing good bowls. Skoglund scored a big win when opposed to President Parkinson in the first bout. Bickerton has also been invariably successful, and claims a win against the ledoubtable Fov team, when Hawera were, metaphoric"ally speaking, wiping the green with the Slratfordites at Hawera. McMillan has also skipped successfully, and the "clan of macs" have extracted as much pleasure- out of the game as any other four in the competition. Smart has had some mixed talent to control. Although losin» games, he has helped to keep his oppon" ents from gaining big wins. King anil Masters have also done very well at times, whilst Morison made'no mistake when "skipping" against Eltham last Thursday. Regarding Hawera, naturally, the president comes first in. the limelight. In the second game at Hawera, with Syme assisting, he put up hi* fi"urcs against Stratford, but on the batter's ground, the veteran found the "reen too slow for his play. Yet he mad'e his opponents play "canny" at times, and quite enjoyed the outing whether pilini' up the points or the "blobs." Foy invariably had a strong rink, and the success of his four was also in a large measure due to his generalship; nothing mattered, and with one exception bis "scores were sufficient to place his rink on top. A. and W. Robertson were players who took great care of their rinks, aiid it was no fault of theirs that Hawera did not land the divisiun championship, whilst Grant, Tait and Tarrant were also keen skips, who were careful to give nothiii" away in points. Eltham has several <niod men. Garter put up a good fight against the invincible Sharp (Stratford), and it can also be claimed that Carter's four kept the lead and made Sharp burn more heads than he has previously done. McKay is quite a youth as bowlers go. but at times put in some effective work against McMillan, only to find the. latter bowling just a shade better, and getting the points. Ross showed up well against Morison, but the Stratford men generally evincved a better conception of the four points of the game. Coming to the greens, it may be said that Hawera has a fine turf. The Stratford men believe/Hawera's grounds the best in the province.. The Stratford ground has worn badly, and in parts is destitute of grass-thc dry spell bein« mainly responsible, and only a soakin« ram will improve it. The Eltham placers were clearly disappointed with th'is green, and found it very difficult to gauge its strength. Thc'writor has not seen the Eltham green, but Hawera and Stratford players state that it is in very good order. J

The Easter pairs tournament is to be played on the Inglewood, Stratford and Hawera gieens. Stratford will enter several pairs, whilst.other clubs, south of ;\ew Plymouth, will also he stroiHv represented. ° '
