DEPENDENTS' ALLOWANCES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 10. Under the system in vogiiS up to a little while ago the wife of a soldier could only obtain a separation allowance for children to the number of five. That restriction has now been removed. However many children the wife of a soldier has, she can obtain separation allowance of 9d per day for each child until it reaches the age of 16 years.
WELLINGTON'S WATER SUPPLY. Wellington, March 10. Owing to the continuance of dry weather seriously threatening the ' water supply, tho City Council, at a special meeting to-day, passed a by-law prohibiting the use of water for hoskig windows, gardens, or for ornamental fountains, whether private or in public gardens and reserves. The Mayor suggests the citizens should assist by using shower baths instead of plunges, ami curtailing the use of water in other directions as much as possible.
ANTI-SHOUTING CHARGES. Whangarei, March 10. The Whangarei Magistrate's Court. Mr. Burton, S.M., presiding, concluded a sitting which commenced last Tuesday, chiefly concerning a batch of charges under the anti-treating clauses and war regulations. Tho three defendants, Hamblin, Todd, and Tajlor, were fined £25 each. Mott, a barman, who was implicated with the other three, was fined "£lO. The amount in his case was subsequently reduced to £1 on account of losing his employment land having hospital fees. Ti charges against the two oilier defendants were dismissed, on the ground that the constable was possibly mistaken. In several other cases judgment was reserved. The hearing of these and the charges previously noted occupied the court approximately ,40 hours. LURING AWAY, WORKMEN, Wanganui, March 19. At a meeting of the local National Efficiency Committee to-night strong complaint was made of the growing practice of firms filling gaps on staffs caused by enlistment by luring away employees of opposition firms by the promise of higher wages, tt was decided to bring under the notice of the Efficiency Board the necessity of the Government framing regulations to prevent employees from leaving their present employ without a permit from the Minister or some responsible authority.
