THE FRENCH ADVANCE.
FIGHTING THE ENEMY REARGUARDS. WHOLE OF GERMAN. FRONT SECURED. Received March 19, 11.40 p.m. London, March 19. A French communique states: The French advance was continued on a front of over sixty kilometres between Avre Avre and the Aisne. North of Avre the French cavalry entered Nesle. We immediately threw out patrols towards the Homme and fought several engagements with the enemy rearguard, which feebly resisted. The French advanced twenty kilometres north-east of Lassigny, in the direction of Ham. Further south our cavalry and light detachments, following the course of the Oise, occupied Xoyon, between the Oise and Soissons. The whole of the German first line, with the villages of Carlepont, Morsain, and Nouvronvinjre, fell into our hands. We gained a footing on the plateau north of Soissoiiß and occupied C'rouy. We easily repulsed an enemy attack near lllieims. There was lively artillerying in the Champagne and at Verdun. The Herman attack on Chambrettes collapsed.
WLOTHEB COUNTRY. ANOTHER AIR RAID. ON SOUTH-EAST COAST. London, March 17. Official.—Hostile airships attacked the south-eastern counties last night, and dropped bombs over Kent. The raid is progressing. RESTRICTED USE OF SUGAR. London, March 17. The Food Controller liimts manufacturers' use of sugar during 1017 to 40 per cent, of the quantity used during !!)1"). The restriction does not'apply to makers of jam, marmalade or condensed milk. PRICES OF TEA AND COFFEE FIXED. London, March 18. Lord Devonport (Food Controller) has arranged that tea is to be retailed from May 1 at 2s 2d per pound. 'Upwards of JO per cent, of the Indian and Ceylon imports have been allocated to the trade so as to ensure a reasonable supply. It has also been arranged to retail good pure- colfee at la tid per pound forthwith. NEW ZEALAXDERS FOOTBALL. London, March IS. At football the New Zcalanders from Hornchureh beat the Canadians, by 3S points to 3. ST. PATRICK'S DAY. Reuter Service. Dublin, March IS. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated quietly.
