STRATFORD.
[All coramunieatians, letters, etc., left with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] (From Our Own Correspondent). Stratford, March 19. A case of interest to farmers engaged the attention of Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., for some time on Friday. The claim was one of grazing 11 heifers from /.■September 9, 1915, to June 14, 1910. The value of the claim was £22 Ms sd, less £i in respect of a contra claim. The contending parties were the Morrison brothers "(3), of Toko, and the defendant, .T. Paul, of Stratford. Mr. Truby King looked after the interest of the Coko trio, and Mr. Percy Thomson was »ut for justice to Mr. Paul. The evidence taken by plaintiffs, A. E. Hay ward :ind J. R. Loekhead, went to prove that i. charge of, Is per head per .week was Ihe usual figure for grazing. The evidence for the defence was that the charge was excessive, and considering the accommodation secured Paul reckoned a charge of "Vbd per head a. fair tiling. C. Mumby, who has had many years' experience in the district, thought (>d a reasonable charge. It was stated I,'hat Paul had paid £lO into court as lull settlement, but this amount was declined by plaintiffs, who also turned down a suggestion that the clam should go to arbitration. After taking evidence the case was adjourned for further hearing till March 30, when other witnesses lor tile defence will be heard. The cadet at Whangnmomona, who ran amuck and assaulted the stationmaster there, is at present in Xew Plymouth, whither he was sent on Saturday. His ca : e will be reviewed by the Magistrate on March 30. Tiie Ladies' famnlSc Committee are loin? good work with the needle in a .ire moments. Once a week they rim i lea. room and mart. Thi- total will prove very acceptable to the Ladies' ■Patriotic 'lnnimittee, who much appreciated the presence and assistance- of the ladies from Te Wera. 'Hie great Allies' march continues, F rst we have the capture of Bagdad, •lien Eapauzne, and now Peronne is wrested from tie enemy's grip. Writing of grips, reminds one that there has been quite a run on ladies' handbags in Stratford. This is scarcely to be wondered at, seeing that C. E. James, of the Jewellery and Fancy Goods Warehouse, has been offering .some, which for price and quality are unequalled in tlie Co million.
