GRASS FIRES AT WELLINGTON.
THREE BUILDINGS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The long dry spell has had the effect of parching the hills surrounding the city, and many grass fires at various times have caused anxiety to suburban residents. To-day, the populous locality of Khaiidallali had its turn, beginning with an outbreak in the grass beside the railway, apparently originating from locomotive sparks. The flames spread rapidly, and threatened many residences. Willing hands soon organised into firefighting units, and stemmed the advance of the flaming avalanche. One house, owned by Mr Paliyer, who is now in camp, was destroyed. The Town Hall and Captain McArthur's residence nearly shared the same fate. The city fire brigade's chemical engine went out, and the mounted police also assisted. The worst danger is now past, but watchfulness is necessarv.
