THE TRAMWAY RATE.
NOT TO BE LEVIED When the tramways committee's r«j port was referred to at the meeting ol the Borough Council last evening, Cr EJ Griffiths mentioned that a recommendaJ tion had been made that a twopenny' tramway rate l>c struck for the ensuing 1 year. Or Griffith* questioned whether; it was necessary to strike this rate. Thai Tramways Department had a credit of £•2000. It was estimated that this year. ' would result in a loss on the working of the system of £SOO, or at ttie out-' ' Bide £IOOO. In the latter event there, would still be £IOOO in hand. Why was it desirable to add further to this credit by striking the twopenny rate proposed f, It had been suggested that any credit, left after the system had been established as a paying proposition should' be transferred to the general fund, or' should be used for the reduction of the) overdraft. Cr Griffiths was opposed tO| this idea. He moved that no tramwayi rate be struck this year. Or. S. J. Smith seconded. Cr Monteath supported the adoption of the report as it The extra 1 money might be required for emergency, tiich as the making up of any loss that m\ght accrue as the result of one or more of the cars being put out of ac» tion. Every business should have* reBene capital, and so should the tramways. Cr Griffiths* motion was carried, and tho report, with the clause referring to. the twopenny rate, was deleted.
