AT THE EAST END.

TWO PICNIC PARTIES. Thursday was an ideal day for conntry visitors to the East End bench. At 10 a.m. a long and well-filled train, conveying over a thousand people, the children of the Eltham, Te Roti, Rotokare and Pukengahn schools, the parents of the children, and their teachers, and the employees of the Eltham Box Company made the trip. The Eltham picnic was organised by the the Eltham School Committee, and was the most successful held under its auspices. A mucb-discnssed race between the employees of the Box Company took place, and was won by Walter Young. The usual morning train also conveyed a few hundred excursionists from Midhirst. The East End Committee had eevrything in readiness for the comfort of the excursionists, and their efforts were much appreciated by the Eltham School Committee. The young folk had the daj of their lives, whilst the outing has. also been made the annual pilgrimage of many adults who look forward to having a few hours' sunshine at the East End. At 4 o'clock the first return train was despatched, amidst cheers. An abundance of fruit and other luxuries was always obtainable, whilst the youngsters took full toll of the pleasure apparatus set up on the grounds. Eltham always had a weakness for the East End, and judging by the high expressions of approval at the committee's work on their behalf, will probably be back again in due course in 1918.
