WAIHI PATRIOTIC FETE.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Settlers of the Waihi district yesterday gave a further exhibition of their patriotism. Favored by glorious weatht, there was a good attendance in the Waihi school grounds, where the patriotic carnival was held, and the Patriotic Committee—Messrs H. M Purdie (president), J. Whitehead, W. J. Clare (vicepresidents), W. Cole, H. Adlam, C. Harsh, G. Graham, J. B. Marsh, and A. Bullians (secretary)—have every reason to be satisfied with the success that attended their efforts and the way in which they were supported right throughout the district. Among those present were: Messrs R. Masters (chairman) and H. Trimble, members of the Taranaki Education Board; E. Beckbessinger, Mavor of Waitara; Messrs J. W. Hayden, W. T. Hookham, and P. S. H. White (Ngamotu), V. H. Beal, L. Honeyfleld, J. Lister, J. Russell, and T. Petty (Kawaroa). The organisation of the whole affair reflected great' Credit on the secretary. As the outcome it is expected that about £IOO will be raised. The catering was an outstanding feature, tiie ladies going one better than last year, and greater praise than this is impossible. The waiting was also particularly good, Mesdames Whitehead, MeKenzie, Clare, Robinson, Jonas, Rackley, Riddle, Ovendon, and Misses Botham, Marsh, Skelton, Giljiver, Whitehead, Terrill, and Edwin, who had charge of this department, have every reason to feel proud of the success achieved. Mr. T. MeKenzie, who acted as treasurer for them, took about £2O from the luncheon and afternoon tea.

The produce stall, which was in charge of Mesdames G. Foreman and Whitehead, took £2 18s 6d; lolly and sweets stall, Mesdames W. Harris and Balr.o'iu, ice creams and soft drinks, Mrs! Bullians, Misses Clare, Foreman. Purdie, and Carr, £7 15s; bran tub, Mesdames Botlmm and Rr.cklev, £3 1U 9d.

Numerous guessing competitions added to the funds. A hand-painted tab'? centre, made find donated by Mr. Butler, of Waitara, in charge of Mrs. Geo. Foreman, realised £? 3s, Mrs. Goo. Foreman being the winner. A watch, m charge of Mr. W. Harris, realised £.2 10s, and was won by Mr. Rogers, Okoke. A cake, made arid presented ty Mrs. Rolfe, in charge of Misses Gitliver" and Skelton (£2 10s), weighed 101b 14}0z., and was won by W. Cole, after & tie with Messrs Grange and Teka, each guessing 111b. A salad bowl, in charge of Mrs. Bullians ( £2 10s), wsw won by Mr. J. Rennie, of Waitara. A set of horns, donated by Mr, J. B. Mabln, Secured £4 Is, Mr. Sam. Topless being the winner. The Wailu school children, under Mr. A. Bullians, gave a delightful exhibition of dancing and marching, and made a pleasing spectacle. Their items included Grand March, Maypole Dance by the junior girls, Swedish drill to music by seniors. Miss Edwin played the accompaniments. The sports proved very interesting and varied. There were several horse events, under the control of Messrs J. B. Mabin, W. Topliss, and H. Adlam. Messrs R.,H. Pigott and A. H. Halcombe acted as judges. The results were:— Maiden jump: T. Buchanan's Reynardeau 1, J. Cole's 2. Seven competed. Open jump: W. McKenzie's Nellie 1, A. Woods' Patronale 2. Seven competitors. Victoria Cross competition: A Woods' Patronale 1, T. Buchanan's Reynardeau 2. The go between these horses was very exciting, the winner just heading Reynardeau over the last jump. The other sports were in charge of Messrs G. N. Skelton and W. Cole, Messrs J. W. Hayden and P. S. H. White (N T gamotu) being judges, and Mr. T. Buchanan (Waitara) timekeeper. A bicycle race of about seven miles, round the Waihi block, through Tikorangij and back to Waihi, attracted ten entries. It resulted as follows: Rona (LJmin.) 1, W. Bailey 2, T. Bailey 3. Time, 29min. 54sec; the second man took 30min. 54sec. Sheaf tossing: K. Topliss, junr., 1. About 30 entries. Chain stepping: W. Bailey 1. G. N. Skelton 2. Fifty competed. There were numerous races for the children, which produced big fields and were keenly contested. Additional enjoyment was added by a concert organised by Mr. T, Buchanan
