STRATFORD.

tAll communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will re«eive prompt attention.] (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, March 7. There is on view here a very fine photographic view of the New Plymouth A. and P. Showgrounds. The work was done by Mr J. McAllister, and should prove a valuable memento to officials and others of the initial show on the new grounds. Stratford is well represented at the Territorial camp at Waiwakaiho, the little "mob" from round here aggregating sixty. The Stratford School Committtes met here yesterday, Mr J. McMillan presided. Delegates present represented Stratford, Ruapnha, Cardiff, Pukengahu, and Denbigh Road. Some comment was caused on the unnecessary amount of notepaper and exercise books used in the primary schools. It was decided to draw the attention of the Education Board to this matter, and suggest that siates be used. A notice of motion was tabled that school committees should ' have more opportunities in the selection | of teachers. Although indications point \ to the district undergoing a dry spell, February was a fairly wet month. According to returns, rain fell here on sisteen days. Information reaches me that Ngaere members of the W.C.T.'U. (a very strong branch, by the way) were entertained yesterday afternoon' by Mrs A. Walker. A very pleasant hour or so was spent and much, appreciated by those fortunate enough to be present. Letters from the front are coming in freely. One just received is from Sergt. B. Davis, interest therein being increased by the information it contains of having dropped across many other soldiers ,of earlier reinforcements. Davis has not been many months away from the Dominion, but ho mentions that while stationed at Rouen he came across George Kindbcrg (late of Kerr's), Sommerfield (late of Cannon's), Harston (abattoirs) and E. Walsh. Rouen is historical for many reasons, its chief reason for fame or notoriety being'that it possesses a monument of Joan of Arc, supposed to be set up on the actual spot where she was burnt 'at the stake. The Whangamomona Show will be held this week. Mr R._McK. Morrison is one of the judges. j A Kohuratahi motorist, Mr A. McCutchen, lost his car through the lights suddenly refusing duty, and in the darkness the car going over the bank on the Maico Road. The drivei and his brother, who was a passenger, escaped injury. The public are usually keen judges of value, hence it is no surprise to record that there has been a steady demand for the ladies' handbags now being offered at C. E James' iancy goods warehouse. Low price_s and good quality leather is a combination hard to beat.
