SWIMMING.
'HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. DECIDED AT THE MUNICIPAL BATHS. There was a crowded attendance at the Municipal Baths last night, when the New Plymouth Boys' High School swimming championships were decided under ideal weather conditions. The organisation was again perfect, and the programme was expeditiously carried out. Competition was keen in the various events, finishes in the majority ot eases bing decidedly close. The responsible for the successful issue of the sports were Messrs W. H. Moycs (starter), A. R. Ryder (call steward), Rockel and Bottrell (judges), and the sports committeeMessrs McKinney, McMurray, and Masters O. Bayley, Goss, McKay, Callander, and Tansey. Messrs J. Bennett and N. Greiner were timekeepers. At the conclusion of the sports Messrs Schwartz and Christiansen gave an interesting exhibition of fancy swimming and diving, which was most attentively watched and keenly appreciated by the spectators, who generously applauded. Detailed results: JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. 25 yards— First heat: O'Halloran 1, Osborne 2, C. Smart 3. Alro started, Reeves, Malt, Lints, Zinsli, Henderson. Second heat: O. McHardy 1, Burkhardt 2, Doile 3. Also started, 'K. West, Rawson, Sturtevant, Mitchell, G. Bayly, Renaud. Final: O'Halloran 1, Reeves 2, McHardy 3. Time, 15 2-Ssec. 50 yards.—First heat: O'Halloran 1, Reeves 2, Osborne 3. Also started, Malt, Lints, Zinsli, Henderson, and C. Smart. 'Won by about a yard. Time, 37 2-asec. Second heat: G. Bayly and Burkhardt (dead heat) 1, Doile *3. Also started. K. West, O' McHardy, Rawson, Sturtebant, Mitchell and Renaud. A great race, the judges being unable to separate the first two. Time, 41 l-ssec. Final: O'Halloran 1, Reeves 2, Doile 3. Won by a narrow margin. Time, 39see. 75 yards.—Reeves 1, O'Halloran 2, Doile 3. Also competed: Malt, Lints, Zinsli, Henderson, C. Smart, K. Also started: Herbert and Bayly. A good go. Time, 15 2-ssec. 50 yards.—McKay 1, Spence. 2, Callander 3. Also started: Herbert and Bayly. Won rather easily. Time 30 1-ssec. 100 yards.—Spence 1, McKay 2, Bayly 3. Also started: Callander and Herbert. This proved an exhilarating finish. Spence winning by a touch, amidst enthusiastic applause. Time, lmin. 24 2-5 sec. 20P yards.—McKay 1. Also started, Spence and Callander. For the first 100 yards McKay and Spence were level. McKay then forged ahead and spence dropped out, leaving McKay to finish alone. Time, 3min. 36sec. The championship points were: McKay 18, Spence 10, Callander 3. MISCELLANEOUS. Old boys' race, OG yards.—Howell (1 sec.) 1, Hoffmann (2s'ee.) 2, Gibson (3 sec.) 3. Also started: McMurray wcr Kidd lsec, Whittle 1, Russell 2, Lepine 3, Mackie 4. The majority of the entrants were boys who had left schoof last year, the bulk of the old boys having gone to the front. The winner, who finished a yard in front, was a returned soldier. Time, 52sec. Corfu dive.—Rawson 1, Morrison 2. Sutherland, Horner, Kyngdon, and McHardy ii also competed. Musical lifebuoys.—First heat: C. Smith 1. Second heat: Hooper 1. The final was won by G. C. Smith. Awkward entry.—Osborne won this event after having to give a deciding exhibition with Guscott. There were eight other competitors, and the event proved highly diverting.
