ELTHAM.
(By Our Travelling Reporter.) Eltham, March 5. There was a large attendance of the public at the railway station this morning to farewell the local men leaving for Trentliani. The names of those entraining were: J. W. Barr, W. Booker, D. Brew, A. C. Constable, R. G. Davis, H. Farren, J. B. Fennigan, W. D. Graham, W. Lawson, S. Lov?, J. McGcnneley, Herb, and Harold Parkinson, S. Powell, A. J. Purdv, H. Soarks, and 0. M. Young. The Mayor (Mr. B. Dive), in a brief speech, farewelled the soldiers, and trusted they would be granted the good fortune to return sound in health and limb. On Saturday the town presented a specially busy appearance. The occasion was one on which several soldiers who had fought in the Boer war controlled the local patriotic mart and tearooms. Settlers sent in generous supplies of produce, whilst lady sympathisers and local bakers assisted in the confectionery line. Messrs Jack Hnbbs and Guy Cooper, auctioneers, also assisted in making the day go with a swing. As a result of the day's efforts well over £IOO was secured. A sheep-guessing competition resulted in a tie between Miss Kelliher (1301b) and Mr. P. de I.aunay (1291b), the actual weight being 129 J lb. The sheep (donated by Ivy and Nita Trott) was bought- back at auction by these ladies. Complete results are not known, but should give the Wounded Soldiers' Fund a lift along. ' iparently riding in a cart is not al-
< safe. At least one Elthamite, J. Rutherford, took a somersault from the cart of Mr. .T. Lake to the road on Saturday. The blow rendered our coal merchant unconscious, and at first it looked like a serious accident, but after being attended to Mr. Rutherford greatly improved. At Mangatoki last week a social was tendered Privates R. E. Rae, F. A. Catley, and Dave Henry. Each received a wristlet watch, knife and text-book. A very pleasant evening was spent. Although Mangatoki is only a email place as population goes, it is intensely loyal. So far the roll of honor board records •10 representatives, and of these three have made the supreme sacrifice.
