OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent). The Opunake Horticultural and Industrial Society held their annual Autumn Show in the Town Hall on Wednesday. The attendance was good, about £lO being taken at the door. The llower display was not up to the usual, no doubt the" result of tlio very dry weather we have had. The fruit and vegetable classes were not equal to prevous shows, although the few exhibits in these classes were of good quality. Competition in the decorative class was very poor. There were more competitors in the cooking section than usual, no less than eight competing' for the special prize l'or ''war calcc." Air Gibson, of Riverlea, had a grand display of flowers, including grandiflora, paniculta and roses. Another exhibit that attracted attention was that of the lemons grown bj Mrs G. W. Rogers. /The jMorshead. Nursery Company's (New Plymouth) exhibit of cut blooms also received a largt amount oE attention and admiration. In the evening a reciting competition was one of the attractions, the special prize for girls being awarded to Ycne Mullon Eric, Maehrav won the boys' prize. Ruby Hurst and Stancey Powell were very good in a dialogue in character. Miss R. Sliortt and Mrs Sylvester conducted the gipsy tent, and Mr lily-the had charge of the game of rings. Miss Myra Sylvester danced a Highland Fling nicely, for which she was heartily applauded. The Ladies' 1 Guild attended to the supper room, under the supervision oi Mrs Hammond.

The prize winners at the show were: Pot Plants—Mrs M. J. Bremian and Mrs Guy, Mrs Brennan winning Dr Kelly's 'special 5/-, and Mrs Moore's points prize 0/-. Cut Flowers—Mrs Moore, Mr J- Burgess and Mr J. Pettigrew. Mrs Moore won Mv Blythe's trophy for cut flowers (annuals); Mr 0. Looney's special 5/for pansics; Mr M. J. Brennan's special ( 10,/- for cut llowets; and Duncan and' levies' special for most points. 78-82. value 10/0. Mr Burgess was awarded Mr K. CanneH's trophy for classes -40utfj and Mr 10. Thorp's special prize of '>/■ for asters. Mrs Rathebone's special for classes 70 and 11; Mr Judson's special 5/- for collection of phlox; and the special »/- for sweet peas went to Mr J. Pettigrcw. Mr J. Burgess v.-on a champion certificate far dahlias and Mr J. Pcttigrew a champion certificate for roses.'

Decorative. —In this section Mrs J. Feaver's special 3/ points prize and Holmes' special 5/- for howl of flowers were both won bv Mrs Marshall. fruit.—Miss West, Mr Cox, Mr J. Burgcs and Mrs D. Mouri. Miss West .won the points prize donated by F. 'Julian (5/-). Vegetables.—Mr Cox won the points prize given by the Morshcad Nursery Company, value 10/-, and Mrs Moore's special ;">/- for potatoes. Mr E. Marshall's special 5/- wont, to Ivan Julian Preserves.—Miss i 4. West was the winner of the points prize, 5/-, donated by Rev. Gosnell.

Cookins. —Mrs D. Eos', Mrs Guy ami M?s Marshall. Mr C. Callaghan's spe cial 5/'- for home-made bread, Mr G Hammond's special S/- for classes 171 to Iftli, and Mr Campbell's special 5/joints priz;-- were won by Mrs D. lioss, Mrs' Guy won Mr M. Fleming's special ">/■ for "war cake." Miscellaneous. —Crochet work collection, Mrs M. J. Brennan; child's crocheted petticoat, Mrs M. J. Brennan; drawn thread work, Miss G. Penteloii; Mount Mcllic work, Miss F. Pentelow; drawing, pencil, Dora Heath; wood carving, chip, W. Callag'ean.
