Excellent business was done at the Red Cross Mart on Saturday, and, after receiving a number of promised donations, Misses Sangster and Falder expect to be able to hand over a good amount to the fund. Mr H. Good was the sheep guessing competition winner, with an estimate of 14Hlbs (actual weight being 141.?lbs), and he re-donatea the sheep to the funds. Miss David, of Cardiff, won the cushion, and Mr A. Drake, of Stratford, won the three months picture ticket, Mr C. D. Sole, J.P. (acting coroher) held an inquest on the body of Edwaru W. Lvford, whose death was reported in yesterday's issue. The jury comprised Messrs R. Masters (foreman), C. Jackson, A. D. Stanley, A. Drury, A. Moon, and W. Rowson. After hearing the evidence of Sergeant Dale and Leslie Lvford (brother of deceased) the jury recorded a verdict that the deceased committed suicide by hanging himself while in a state of unsound mind.

The employees of Messrs Smart Bros.' Stratford branch met oh Saturday evening and farewelled Mr R. Crossan, who is leaving the firm's employ alter four and a half years. Mr Crossan intends holidaying for the next three months, until he has attained the age at which He can enlist, when he will go into camp. On behalf of the firm and employees, Mr Geo. Smart presented him with a Gillette shaving outfit. Mr. W. 11. Besley, manager of the Molern Tailors Limited, has been rejected "s medically unfit. Sir James Allen, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, will visit Stratford on Wednesday, and will present Corporal C. Barker with the Distinguished Conduct Medal that lie won. Phe ceremony will take place at 8 pv. in the Town Hall. A parade of Territorials and Senior Cadets is called for the purpose of attending the ceremony. The harvest festival services conducted on Sunday in the Salvation Army barracks by Captain and Mrs Campion were tvell attended. The hall was beauflkilly decorated. The celebrations wereTiontinued last night, when a programme iras supplied by the local talent. Tonight the new band will provide the music, and to-morrow night the Eltharo Crass Band vAjJI provir'/- the musical proCramme for the concluding night. The death occurred this morning of Vfrs Gooeh. wife of Mr Clias. Gooch, of Makahu, who passed away at the residence ot lrer sister-in-law, ?frs Collins, if Rosalind street. Deceased, who was 12 years of age, had recently undergone m operation fof an internal trouble. She ivas well known in the Stratford and Cardiff districts, being a daughter of the late MV T. Savill.
