MILITARY SERVICE BY CLERGY.
STATEMENT BY. MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, February 23. A joint deputation of Methodists and 'Presbyterians waited upon the Acting. Premier to-day in order to ascertain the position of the clergy generally in regard to the ballot, and as to exemptions from military service. Tho deputation was of a private character, but Sir James All-en afterwards stated to a reporter that lie had assured tho deputation that the use of the regulation in regard to_ the Minister for Munitions sending down ii certificate of exemption applied to the clergy of all denominations; that there was no partiality at all in the matter, and that the only condition was that the head of each Church should apply only in cases where they deemed it really necessary to make an application.
