Mr. ttughes, in moving the prolongation motion, said that though they had come to a grave crisis in the war they w«re not getting much more than half the recruiting they had for this period last year, although the demands were greater than ever. The elections would make recruiting appeals impossible and futile. In the Senate, Mr. l'earee said that if the people decided in the .new circumstances in favor of conscription, the Government would deal with the matter. In reply to a question from Senator Millen whether they had decided to have a referendum or an election, Senator Pearce replied, "We shall see."
