RELIEF OF SOLDIERS.

DUTY OP CLAIMS BOARD. BOARD EXPRESSES SURPRISE. When the 'appeal of J. J. Hanan, postal official, whose case was before the Board the previous day, came up before the Military Service Board at Hawera again on Friday evening, Mr O'Dea, for the appellant, said he had received a letter from the secretary of the local Patriotic Committee, who forwarded the following' resolution: "That the Claims Committee of the Hawera Patriotic and Wounded Soldiers' Committee having considered very fully the request of the Military Appeal Board to pay the debt* of certain soldiers at the front, or who may be called, up, regret- that they cannot make any recommendation to the Taranaki War Relief Association as they consider the funds were subscribed solely for the relief of sick and wounded soldiers and their dependents.'' The members of the Board expressed surprise at the committee's recommendation in view of the fact that the constitution of the Association provided for the special case which was before it. They pointed out that similar cases would, come before the Board protty frequently when the Second Division men were called up. . The Board adjourned the appeal until the next sitting to enable a reply to be received from the Government in respect to the appellant's application for finvxiH assistance. ~
