TRAMCAR LEAVES THE RAILS. SMASHES INTO HOTEL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Feb. 22. About midnight a tram going down the rather steep gradient of Khyber Pas-; Road, got out of control, loft the rails and crashed into the alleyway between the savings bank and a hotel. The car contained five passengers, who all escaped uninjured. The motorman. Halley, stuck to his post. He was cut about the face, but walked to a doctor's residence. Part of the outer wall of the hotel was torn away, and the remainder of the ivall knocked out of the perpendicular. The private bar was completely wrecked, and some of the bedrooms overhead WW considerably damaged. The rooms were not occupied. The wife of the proprietor was thrown out of bed in a room at the back of the premises, and a boarder, who occupied another room, was also thrown out of bed. The Harbor Board to-night adopted a motion urging an amendment of the Harbors Act, enabling boards to increase the dues and charges on ships owned or partly owned by persons who are natives of countries engaged at present in war against Britain. At a meeting of the Advisory Board of the New Zealand Patriotic War Relief Association to-day it was resolved that representations be m'ade to the Government on the matter of widowed mothers' separation Allowances, to see if some readjustment canont be arrived at. Members expressed the opinion that the limit of £230 of capital or an income of 7s a week was too low. The Board considered that the arrangement made for allotment of pay to soldiers' wives was satisfactory, and urged that the rates chargeablo on parcels to soldiers were too high, and that the matter be brought before the Government.
