A cablegram from Rome states that Italy will rt-adopt daylight-saving on March 25.
A boy named Roper, eight years of age, got in the way of a truck on the wharf yesterday, with the result that his toe was crushed. Ho was given first aid by an officer of one of the boats At the wharf, and subsequently was attended by Dr McCleland. The funeral of the late Mr George Marx took place at the Eltham cemetery yesterday. There was a very large attendance of mourners, no less than 53 motor carß and 40 other vehicles being in the cortege. The burial service wai conducted by the Rev. G. W. Dent.
The poll taken on Monday bv the Opunake Harbor Board, to raise a loan of ££o,ooo for the construction of harbor \Verks, .was lost. The voting was as follows: Opunakc, for 104, against 71; Piliama, ) and •«; Oaonui, l« and 12; To Kiri, 3"and H; totals, for 124, against 121. It required a three-fifths majority to carry the poll.
The special committee appointed by the -Eltham County Council and the Strat lord Count}- Council to go into the question of county boundaries, met in. ISltham on Monday. It was understood that an agreement, acceptable to both parties, was come to, and that this will. bo later on submitted to a full meeting of each Council for confirmation. The takings at the Mart on Saturdav last amounted to £29 The committee wish to thank Mr J Corrigal, Mr A. G. Catran, Miss Percy Smith, and several friends for donations, and also to remind housekeepers and good cooks of the demand of bome-made goods, especially cakes, pastry, etc. The following were the winners in the competition:—Mrs E. A. Walker, Mrs Beal, Mrs Faull (Tikorangi), Mrs Sam Roberts, Mrs Colson, Mr Rich. The combined golf clubs are arranging to run the mart on March 10. and Hunvorth residents are assisting the Rod Cross Society with their day, March 17, instead of March 10th, as previously arranged.
"yesterday the. Mayoress of New Plymouth (Mrs. C. H. Burgess), at the invitation of the Hawera Returned Soldiers' Club, gave an interesting address on the, establishing and conducting ot the New Plymouth Soldiers' Club. In answer to a que-stion, Mrs. Burgess said that cards, chess and draughts were all provided, but seldom used. The billiard und writing tables were far more popular, and tlie -men loved to read and to chat among themselves. In conclusion, Mrs. Burgess assured the ladies present that if they provided the men with looms and a homelike atmosphere, and treated them in the right spirit, they need have no fears regarding the success of the club they were about to estab lisli in Hawera. Mrs. Barton thanked Mrs. Burgess for her kindness in coming nil the way from New Plymouth to help Mid encourage the Hawera ladies, notwithstanding the fact that her time was bo fully occupied with her own patriotic work. Mrs. Burgess said she would now take the keenest interest in the Hawera Club, and was pleased to accept an invitation to be present ou the opening ■lay. She left the Hawera women more determined than, ever to provide the men frith rooms, which would be a credit to Hawera and a comfort to the men, and ifhich they would be able to take pleasure in showing to their friends.
