BOWLING.
HAWERA DEFEATS STRATFORD. Stratford bowlers yere loud in their praises of the green available for the banner match decided at Hawera. on Thursday last, it being voted the best played on tlvs season. The visitors found the green too fast, and at the commencement the local men piled up the scores so confidently that it seemed to be only a question of how many the home players would win by; but the final figures were: Ilawrra J57, Stratford 114, showing a comfortable win. C. Robertson (Hawera) scored a seven in the third head against Sharp, but after that (lie Stratford skip played very steadily. It was not till the twentieth head that, the lead was secured, and then the final figures favored Stratford, 26-22. Xieholsou was up against trouble right from the start, when pitted against Parkinson, the Hawera president, who took the lead, and although Nicholson had a strong trio assisting him the scores steadily went to Hawera, who finished 34-14 in their favor. For a long period Skogluiid got in some solid work against Grant, but a margin of seven points ended in favor of Hawera, 20-10. Bickerton was up against the redoubtable Foy four. Hitherto this rink has proved invincible •at New Plymouth and Stratford, but in this contest met their Waterloo. The early stages favored the Hawera skip, but after several fine heads the Stratford skip got his scores ahead, and eventually ran out a winner by 27 to 23. The next eight read more like a Hielan' gathering, the Maes predominating. ''Jock" McMillan, frae Stratford, ye ken, had a wee crack wi' Willie Robertson, and, mon, it was a rale grand game. Jock was aye tryin' to drive kitty, and Willie, why, one would ha'o thoeht kitty was his best girl, the envious eyes he was makin' at Jock's approaches. Willie prevailed in the end, 14-21. George Smart fell with a bump. He quickly finished liis rink and, like the Arab, quietly took up his bowls and vanished—cause, Tarrant .11, Smart 14. Of course somebody had to lose, but George hopes it wiil be the other fellow next time. Results of play, Stratford mentioned first:—
