WESTOWN SCHOOL.
ADDITIONS REQUIRED. The need for more room in the West Km! school, mid in the playgrounds, was impressed upon members of the 'laranaki Education Board yesterday, when the school <was visited. Anion l ..' those present were Mcssr*. It. Master* and S. J. Siuitli (members of Iho Kilnc-n----lion Board), "Messrs. K. Smart and 1!. ■'!. Den re. (member.s~of the West End School Committee), and Mr. 11. Moore (the Education Hoards foreman). Mrs. Dowling (headmistress) conducted the visitors through the school, anil demonstrated its overcrowded state, and the difficulty experienced -by the teachers m li'i under the existing conditions. Ihe school gymnasium accommodated over 70 children. It was stated that tlio school attendance was now iioß, an.l that when the children were at play they were considerably restricted, owing to the limited space. The question of acquiring an acre of land adjoining the school was discussed. The price required ( .t'1200) was considered reasonable. . The Department has agreed to pay half the cost, and the Board's difficulty is to find the other halT. It was considered that little difficulty wSuld bit met with in obtaining a grant for additions to the building. With a new children'!! department, having an accommodation for K>o children, the pressure oil the main building would be relieved, and the work could be carried on more
satisfactorily, while leaving the gymnasium to be used for the purpose for which it was built. The deliberations of the committee, will be placed before the Board, and the matter will be the subject of further consideration.
