THE TARANAKIAN.
A XEWSY MAGAZINE. "It is absolutely imperative that this year should see a new school erected anil occupied," is the keynote of the editorial which prefaces the current issue of the Taranakian, the magazine eonducted by the pupils of the Xew Plymouth. Boys' High School, a copy oi which has just come to hand. The editorial reviews the position of the school since the destructive lire which occurred last year, and after referring to the kindness of the Tarmmki Jockey Club in allowing the school to he 'held in their buildings, asks the pertinent question, "What would happen 'were our hosts to give, us notice to quit?" "There is certainly no other building or block of buildings in or near town which would he in the slighted, degree suitable for us," the editors add. Chatty paragraphs, containing news of the school and. the doings of the pupils occupy ten pages. Then follow Ihe term's diary, form \ averages, reports of cricket matches, anil shooting results. The latter include a full list nf teams and their scores in the Imperial challenge shield competitions. The New Plymouth High School teams won both the senior and junior competitions, and one team was third in the senior competition. The house notes make interesting reading to those connected with the school. A report of the school's field work is contained under the heading ''Agriculture," and this is followed 'by the Preparatory notes. Full accounts are given of the annual athletic sports, boxing championships, steeplechase, sports dinner, and the breaking-up ceremony. Rcference is made to the work o f the cadets, library committee and Camera Club. The Old Boys' notes contain many references to men at the front. A number of interesting letter? describing life, in the trenches are reproduced. In the roll of two wmies of Old Boys who have received decorations—Lieutenant H. M. Lepper, Military Cross (since killed in action), Lieut.-Colone.l I. T. Standish, D.S.O. 'Private Charles' Crone (since killed in action) was mentioned in despatches Sixteen Old Boys have paid the great sacrifice, 31 have been wounded, and IT'S are known to be on active service, At the end of the magazine is the school prospectus. The publication contains a number of excellent photographs, depicting views of the new boarding establishment and the grounds surrounding it. There are also photographs of school rifle, football and cricket teams, and portraits of Old Boys wdio are on active service. The frontispiece is the portrait of V. S.
