During one of these rest spellGrace is bribed 'by a drug fiend to go into Chinatown and get him some opium. Grace goes, and incidentally gets her first taste of the drug. She remembers that it made everything seem like a dream to her, and afterwards, when she and her sister secure employment in a blouse factory, and she is suffering from the effects of overwork, takes opium. She is not suspected, and later, when an ignorant doctor gives her morphine as a medicine, she becomes a secret drug fiend. From this on the story develops strongly.
