The chimes of the town clock are causing trouble again, the clock chiming a quarter of an hour out in the morning. The Hawera police have received advice that Norman Kraetzer has been arrested in Wellington for the alleged theft of a motor-car, and had been remanded to appear at Hawera on Friday next.
The New Plymouth draft of the 2flth Reinforcements will leave for camp this morning. The Citizens' Band and members of the Patriotic Committee will assemble at the station to farewell the recruits. The results of the December examinations show that the Hawera District High School has gained eight junior free places at secondary schools; two pupils gained junior scholarships worth £4O a jear for two years at college, or £lO a year for three years and free education at the local District High School. Eight, pupils passed the Civil Service and intermediate examination, and three pupils were successful with the matriculation examination.—Star.
Some amusement was caused on Stratford, station on Friday evening. I.ieut.Colonels P. A. Lindsay and E. Jennings, of the Wellington Board, who were on their way to New Plymouth, were strolling up and down the. station, glad apparently of a few minutes' change after the tedious train journey from Wellington. They failed to notice the warning whistle of the engine or the station bell, and the train was on the move before they realised their position. The medical officers made a run to catch the train, and one of them, Colonel Lindsay, caught, it by being hurriedly assisted into the mail van.
All unwelcome foreshore visitor yesterday morning was a large shark, estimated at ten feet in length. By a number who sighted the monster early, it was judged that it was out of sorts, as after aimlessly cruising slowly amongst the rocks on 'the reef just on the harbor side of the Kawaroa Park, it became almost stranded, pulling up in about 2 feet of water about 20 feet from the shore. Sufficient water from an incoming wave just enabled the shark to navigate a passage to deeper water. The gold cup which is to be presented tn the owner of the winner of the Taranaki Cup by the T.J.C. has now arrived, and will be placed on exhibition in Mr. W. T. ITookham's shop window. Two Norwegian sailors from the barque Narwhal wore arrested late last night by Constable Itlaikic at the Breakwater, and detained in custody, on a charge of a breach of the War' Herniations by landing without complying with the conditions. They will appear before the Court this morning. A conscientious objector who appeared before the Military Service Board \u New Plymouth last Tuesday, and whose appeal was dismissed, was examined ami passed by the Medical Board on Saturday. He explained his position fully to the starting officer, stating that he had no wish to shirk the danger of the firingline, but he could not conscientiously do combatant work. In the absence of .an undertaking that he would be drafted into the non-combatant service, he recruit refused to take the oath of allegiance TTo was referred to the camp commandant.
Another 10,0(10 names will be drawn from the register of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve, commencing to-day. This is to fill any shortages existing on that date in the 27th nnd 28th Reinforcements. So far some 10,000 members of the First Division have been chosen by lot in the three ballots" taken, the number ben.s, apparently arrived at. on the assumption that two out of every three men would be exempted on one ground or another, ns there wore only about 3500 vacancies to fill.
