MEN FOR THE FRONT.

EXAMINATION OF RECRUITS. FORTY-TWO ACCEPTED, The first examination of recruits by the Wellington District Medical Board was conducted in New Plymouth on Saturday. Despite the heavy rain which fell throughout the day, all the men summoned under / lhe compulsory clauses of the Military Service Act were in attendance, in addition to a number of volunteers. The Board consisted of Lieut.-Colonels P. A. Lindsay and E. Jennings (district examining officers), Captain Gray (group dental officer), and Captain T. Casserley (district attesting officer). The wjAiniualion commenced shortly after nini o'clock in the morning, and, with the; exception of short breaks for luncheon and tea, was continued until half-past eleven at night. One who enlisted under the voluntary system two years ago. and was examined again on Saturday, can testify that the examinations conducted by the Board are much more systematic than those carried out during the early period of the war. Recruits were classed as follows:—A, lit for active service; B, requiring further treatment; C, home service; D, unfit (though liable to he called up for light duties in home service); DD, permanently unfit. The Board examined 75 recruits on Saturday, 2!) of whom were volunteers. Of the latter a number had previously volunteered and had been rejected. Forty-two were classed as fit, 14 were classed as lit for home service, 13 were unfit, and six required further treatment. The Board will conduct an examination at Stratford to-day, and at Havcra to-morrow. Any recruits who failed to present themselves at New Plyinontli on Saturday in accordance with irders may make arrangements to be cxnmined at either Stratford or Hawera on communicating with the local- Defence office.
