.«— EXEMPTIONS FOR POLICE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 31. > At .the sitting of the Military Sc.rv'ce Board the Commissioner of Police appealed on behalf of five constable- on the ground that it was against pvblic interest to take them into the army. He was instructed by the Acting-Prc-mier and the Minister of Justice. Many men were resigning and enlisting and it was extremely difficult to secure recruits and the force was considerably short of Us full strength. Men were being taken on, but not single men. The duties of the 1 polieo had been increased owing to the operations of the Military Service Act. ~ , . All the case; were adjourned s.ne die, the men to receive exemption from service in the meantime conditionally en reporting regularly to the commandants of their respective groups. APPEALS FROM SEAMEN. Wellington, Jan. 31 Several appeals by seamen and firemen were made to the Military 80-ira'. The secretary of the Seamen's tTliioti slated that, "there continued to be a shortage. Abo-.it ISOO members of the in ion in New Zealand and 2000 in Australia had enlisted already. The board will hke time to consider the cases.
