HURWOKTE (From a Correspondent.) A meeting of shareholders of the Frankley Eoad Factory was held on Friday, January 2flt'li. 'it was decided to join the Farmers' Protection League, Messrs.'Baker and Hill being appointed chairman and secretary respectively. The Chairman, in the course of his remarks, drew attention to the unfairness of the %d. butter-fat tax. When the tax was lixed the cheese factories got a license to ship and sell on the London market, but since then the price has been fixed for cheese at 9</ 2 d f.0.b., while Canadian cheese realises Is 2d on the London market. New Zealand buttermakers certainly have the price fixed in : New Zealand, but can get top price for what they can place, on the London [market. Mr. Baker also drew attention to the farmers owning their own ships, his scheme being to. work on the joint-fend-several plan, and allot shares to the factories according to their output, cooperative freezing works to join in. [ln the event of this being done, the ships could be bought through the banks just a3 easily as the factories ire erected. An animated discussion followed in reference to the marketing of dairy produce. The meeting came to the conclusion that the time had arrived when the farmers should handh their produce from the factory to the retailer. Last year Taranaki shipped away dairy produce to the value of over £2,000,000, the commission at this end being well over £OO,OOO. ft was suggested that the different factories appoint a delegate, and go carefully into the question. It was arranged to have another meeting in about a fortnight, of which due noUce will be given.
