PEACE URGENTLY DESIRED.
STATEMENTS BY A RELEASED RUSSIAN. Received Jan. 29, 5.5 p.m. Stockholm, January 28. Dmitri- Jante'heevetsky, the Russian publicist, who has been released after thirty months' imprisonment in Austria, states that there is a universal desire for peace on almost any terms in Aus-tro-Hungary, particularly among the Slavs and Magyars. There, is no feeling of bitterness against the Entente. The Emperor, the Empress and the Court are endeavoring to secure Austria's independence from Germany. The food supply is relatively good in the north, but actual hunger prevails in the -south. In Hungary and the southern Slav States desertions owing to under-feeding have increased threefold in six months. THE SUBMARINE CAMPAIGN. New York, Jan. 28. Cvril Brown, the Berlin correspondent of the New York World, states tjiat the conviction is growing 1n naval cinlcs that the submarine campaign against merchantmpnt must settle the war. The submarine ravages in recent ni.oi.ths have whetted jhe German desire for farther deeds and there is a growing- tene'ency to regard all armed merchantmen as fair game. The ruthless submarine party is tugging at the leash, which may shortly be loosed. FOOD SUPPLY INADEQUATE. Copenhagen, Jan. 2S. At a meeting of the Town Council at Neukoeln, a Berlin suburb, Heitvnanr. a Socialist, protesting against the Government furthe; diminishing the potato, bread and flour rations, and it was impossible to live on two kilograms (1 2 51b) of potatoes weekly, and it was now proposed to reduce the supply to .'£ Irilograms (3 3-101b) per ten days. The director of the Neukoeln food office stated that the supplies were short quite, inadequate for workers.
