MOTOR TRAFFIC.

BOROUGH AND COUNTY FIGURES. The extensive use to which motordriven vehicles are put in New Plymouth, and the surrounding district is demonstrated by figures supplied by the offices of the New Plymouth Borough Council and the Taranaki County Council. In lfllfi no fewer than 54 new motor-cars find 53 new motor-cycles were registered at the borough office. In the previous year the figures exceeded these, being 08 .and fit respectively. These figures give no indication of the total number of cars or cycles running in Taranaki, although the fact that the traffic inspector's books show that the last mo-tor-vehicle (car or cycle) registered to date was numbered 711 gives some idea of the numbers in use. Each new machine has to lie registered when it is first put on the road, but where the car is not plying for hire, there is no system of annua! license.

motor-cars plied for hire last year, including a large number from the country, which were registered for race-days only. Other vehicles registered last year were:—2B expresses, six rabs, four lorries, five motor lorries and six motor 'buses.

The figures for the comity show a heavy increase, the numbers' recorded at tho Taranaki County Council's office be-ing:—Motor-cars, 1010, 71; motor-cycles, irilfi, 30;- motor-cars, 1915, 32; motorcycles, 191.'i, 23.
