SEDITIOUS UTTERANCES.
<», \vANiGANUI MAN SENTENCED TO IMPRISONMENT. "Here's to the success of the Kaiser. I hope the Premier (Mr. Massey) and Ward will be blown to pieces before they land, and that all the British will bo blown to pieces." The above words were used by George Marvin, a laborer, on January 3, 1917, at Wanganui, in the restaurant of Arthur Frederick Harvey, and were deemed seditious utterances under the War Regulations Act, 1914. He was charged accordingly before Mr. T. G. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wanganui, on Wednesday, says the Herald, and pleaded guilty. Accused said that ho had only used the words as a joke. v. The police stated that at the time the words were used Marvin was in an intoxicated state, and used them more out of bravado than anything also. His Worship said that this case was unlike those in which men had tried to convert others to be seditious believers iir public. It was merely a piece of bravado, but such behaviour was not to be permitted. There was no doubt that accused was, drunk at the time, and he had received a thrashing at the time ho used the words. These circumstances would bo taken into consideration, and His, Worship sent Marvin to gaol for 30 days.
