MOTHER COUNTRY.
THE WAR LOAN. THE FOOD PROBLEM. COMPULSORY NATIONAL SERVICE FORECASTED. London, Jan. 21. Lady Woroher has invested two million sterling in the war loan, chiefly new money. She is the largest individual contributor. Large subscriptions exceed 103 millions. Representatives of tlve Russian Government have arrived and arc inquiring es to the possibility of securing certain war supplies here, and negotiating as to future trade connections. The Government has fixed the maximum prices of potatoes lit from £0 to £l4 a ton. according to the varieties. The Midland Farmers' Association passed a resolution that it was imperative that the Government should guarantee the minimum price of cereals for at least five years. Mr. Neville Cnamberlain, speaking at Birmingham, said there would undoubtedly be compulsory national service if voluntary enlistments were inadequate.
